I have used TeX since the early nineties, but never LaTeX before the last couple of weeks. The most useful book I have consulted for practical work with TeX has been the book by Norbert Schwarz «Einführung in TEX». All this time I've also had Donald Knuth's book, but never used it very much, since it is a bit too wordy. Lately I have also used «TeX for the impatient» by Abrahams and Berry, that I can recommend. I think Victor Eijkhout's book is also quite good, but difficult. I have a general background in theoretical physics and applied math. Right now I am reading the brochure by Manuela Jürgens on LaTeX. I think it is quite good, because it is so simple.
